Bernice McIlhenny Wintersteen and Henry P. Maclhenny

Filadelfia (United States)

Description

Bernice McIlhenny Wintersteen(1903-1986) and Henry P. Maclhenny (1910-1986) were the children of John D. MClhenny and Frances Galbraith Plumer. Both passed on their passion for art to their children, who soon began to form their own collections as well. In 1933 Henry joined the Pennsylvania Museum as curator and in 1937 was promoted to Associate Curator of Decorative Arts. He organized numerous exhibitions, including those of Degas, Daumier and William Blake. In 1964 he resigned his position and joined the Board of Trustees and was appointed Vice President from 1968-1976. Before his death, he bequeathed his art collection to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As for Bernice, in 1929 she married attorney John S. Wintersteen. She held important positions: she was a member of the museum's Women's Committee and president of the museum from 1964-1968. Like her brother, Bernice donated pieces to the museum.
