F. Kleinberger Galleries was founded in 1848 in Paris. The origins of the business are not entirely clear, as it seems to have been started by David Kleinberger Dombai in Budapest and later continued by Franz Kleinberger in the French capital. In any case, the firm aimed to import European paintings to the United States. Their success led them to open a branch in New York in 1910. Numerous collectors turned to the gallery to expand their collections, among them Robert Lehman, John G. Johnson and Jules S. Bache. The gallery finally closed its doors in 1971, following the death of Harry G. Sperling.
