The Columbia Museum of Art (South Carolina, United States) opened its doors for the first time in 1950. Originally the institution was located in Taylor House, but the high cost of maintaining this historic building led to a change of location, being moved to the former Macy's department store. Subsequently, in 1998 a new building was inaugurated on Main Street to house the works of art. This was designed by the firm Stevens and Wilkinson. Finally, in 2009 the museum renovated its galleries. The core of the museum's collection originated in donations made by the Kress Foundation between the 1950s and 1960s.
