Description

Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza (1875-1947) was the son of August Thyssen, who had amassed a large fortune through his business in the steel industry. Heinrich studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg and after completing his doctorate he married Margit, daughter of Baron Gabor Bornemisza of Kászon. Initially the couple settled in Rechnitz (Austria), but the Hungarian revolution caused them to go into exile in the Netherlands. During these years Heinrich acquired numerous works of art and in 1932 he decided to buy the Villa Favorita palace in Lugano (Switzerland), where he arranged his collection.
