William Armstrong Fairburn

Morristown (United States)

Description

William Armstrong Fairburn (1876-1947) was born in Huddersfield (Yorkshire, England), but emigrated with his family to the United States in 1891, settling thereafter in Bath (Maine). It was in that city where he began his professional training as an apprentice at the Bath Iron Works. He later joined the Diamond Match Company as an engineer, where he patented the first non-toxic wood phosphor, which contributed to his rapid rise in the company, becoming president of the company in 1915 (Woods, 2013). In the 1920s he built several residential complexes in Maine, New Jersey and California. In them he arranged his private collection, which consisted of maritime objects and works of art. After his death the collection was slowly dispersed, with many of the pieces being sold in the 1960s (Woods, 2013).
