Thomas William Bateman (1852–1895), son of Thomas Bateman, grew up in a family with a keen interest in archaeology and collecting. However, he did not share the same passion as his father and grandfather. As the only male in the family, he inherited his father's estate in 1861. In the 1890s, he experienced financial difficulties, which forced him to auction the family collection at Sotheby's (Rushforth, 2003).
