Herbert Shipman (1869–1930) was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Columbia University. After teaching in New York for a year, he entered the seminary and was ordained a deacon. In 1921, he was elected bishop of New York. Both he and his wife, Julie Bradley Shipman, were avid collectors, mainly of Gothic and Renaissance art. Shortly after Shipman's death, his daughter Julie Shipman sold the art collection in 1936, auctioning it at The American Art Association.
