Convent of Santa Isabel, El Espinar

El Espinar (Segovia, Spain)

Description

The earliest records regarding the Convent of Santa Isabel (El Espinar, Segovia) are found in the will of María de Prado, widow of Luís Vázquez de Arce y Dávila, dated 1582. It states that food was to be provided to the devout women to improve their diet and 1,800 maravedís to gild the altarpiece. María de Prado was not the only woman to take an interest in the monastery; Catalina de Laguna, widow of Alonso Sánchez Ibáñez, did so as well (Sánchez Santos, 2011). The complex, dating from the second half of the 16th century, consisted of various buildings. As a result of the French invasion, the nuns were forced to abandon the convent, and thus its deterioration began in 1808. An inventory was taken to safeguard and prevent the looting of its assets; however, in 1868 they were expelled once again. That year, the townspeople“ransacked the convent, taking and destroying everything in their path; whatever they deemed worthless, they threw into the Renales Stream”(Sánchez Santos, 2011). The convent’s assets were auctioned off in the late 19th century, dispersing among other churches and into private hands.
