William Henry Owen (1874–1944) was the son of William Henry and Mary Lavinia Brooks Owen, who lived in New York. He studied the arts at Yale University and earned a master’s degree in 1899. He later graduated from General Theological Seminary and was ordained a priest in the Protestant Episcopal Church. In 1906, he assumed the position of rector at Trinity Church (Mount Vernon), and in 1922, he became the church’s rector. He was an avid coin collector, amassing more than 10,000 specimens from various periods and origins. He never lost touch with the institution from which he had graduated and even worked as an assistant curator of coins at the Yale University Library. Consequently, in 1927, he donated his collection to the university.
