Object history

Pedro Berruguete painted this panel in 1500 for a bifrontal oratory dedicated to the joys and sorrows of Mary. It is likely that the oratory was located in Castile and León, based on the regions where the artist worked. The exact circumstances of its sale are unknown, but it appears to have been part of the collection of José Gudiol Ricart, who acquired it in the first half of the 20th century. Around 1950, the oratory's panels were separated: The Holy Family was purchased by the Francisco Godia Foundation, and The Lamentation by the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Description

The Lamentation over the Dead Body of Christ is set just after the Descent from the Cross. At the centre of the composition lies the body of Christ, partially covered by a shroud. He is accompanied by the Apostle John, Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, and the Virgin Mary. In the background, a landscape shows three women walking towards the main scene. These are the Three Marys, also known as the Holy Women.

Locations
* The relative location of dealers, antique shops, art galleries, and collectors leads us to the places where they were based or had one of their main headquarters. However, this does not always indicate that every artwork that passed through their hands was physically located there. In the case of antique dealers and art merchants, their business often extended across multiple territories; sometimes they would purchase items at their origin and send them directly to clients. Similarly, some collectors owned multiple residences, sometimes in different countries, where they housed their collections. It is often difficult to determine exactly where a specific piece was kept during its time in their possession. Consequently, the main location of the dealer or collector is indicated. These factors should be considered when interpreting the map. Refer to the object's history in each case.
