Ailsa Mellon Bruce (1901-1969) was the daughter of banker and art collector Andrew William Mellon. Following her father's death, she became heiress to one of the largest fortunes in the United States. Like her father, she developed a keen interest in collecting art and amassed an extensive collection, primarily of Impressionist works. In addition to her private collection, she was a generous benefactor. She made significant donations, and upon her death, bequeathed a substantial portion of her collection to the National Gallery in Washington.
