Description

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts was inaugurated in 1936, with a building designed by Peebles and Ferguson Architects of Norfolk. Its collection was formed thanks to important private donations, including those of John Barton Payne, Lillian Thomas Pratt, T. Catesby Jones, Adolph D. and Wilkins C. Williams, Arthur and Margaret Glasgow and Paul Mellon, among others. Over time the original space proved insufficient to house all the pieces, so in 1970 a new wing was built, designed by Baskervill & Son Architects. Among the works from Castilla y León housed in the museum are a processional cross (Burgos) and a fibula (Palencia).
