The monastery has its origins in the year 990, when King Bermudo II founded a Benedictine monastery to accommodate monks fleeing from the raids of Almanzor. Although it was destroyed a few years later, the Infanta Sancha Raimúndez was in charge of rebuilding it in 1138. From that moment on, the monastery became an outstanding monastic center. In 1203 it was incorporated into the Cistercian order and adopted the name of Santa María de Carracedo. During the 16th-18th centuries, important extensions were made, including the construction of a church, which, however, remained unfinished (Balboa, 1991).
