Description

The Museo Nazionale del Bargello is located in an ancient medieval palace. This building served a residential function: first for the Captain of the People, then for the mayor of Florence and finally for the Captain of Justice. In the 14th century the palace became a prison and, after a complete renovation, it became the Museo del Bargello in 1865. Although the museum was originally intended to house the sumptuary arts of the Middle Ages, in 1887 it was decided to open a sculpture room on the occasion of the year of Donatello. From that moment on, the sculpture collection grew considerably, becoming one of the largest in the world.
