Columbus Alcazar Museum

Santo Domingo (República Dominicana)

Description

The Museo Alcázar de Colón is located in the old viceroyal palace built between 1511 and 1514 for Diego Colón, son of Christopher Columbus, in Santo Domingo. This residence was built on a plot of land granted by King Ferdinand the Catholic and was inhabited by three generations of the family. With the passage of time the building was abandoned and in 1776 it was in ruins. Later, in 1870, it was declared a National Monument and between 1955 and 1957 the Dominican government restored it under the direction of the Spanish architect Javier Barroso. As a result of this restoration, the Alcazar de Colon Museum was created and officially inaugurated on October 12, 1957.
