The Spanish Art Gallery, London

London (United Kingdom)

Description

Lionel Harris (1862-1943) founded The Spanish Art Gallery in 1898, a firm dedicated to the buying and selling of ancient artworks from Spain. Harris grew up watching his father trade in gemstones and goldsmithery, which inspired him to take an interest in the transaction of luxurious objects and to appreciate their value. His son, Tomás Harris, followed in his footsteps, and together they worked in the sale of antiquities (Martínez Ruiz, 2018). Initially, the firm was located at 44 Conduit Street (London), but their success led them to open multiple branches. What set the business apart from other antique shops was their network of contacts in Spain, something they gained through his wife’s family, Enriqueta Rodríguez y León, who were natives of the country (Merino de Cáceres and Martínez Ruiz, 2012). The business attracted prominent magnates and collectors such as Archer Milton Huntington and William Randolph Hearst, among many others. His son Tomás continued the firm until the Second World War, at which point he worked as a British intelligence agent. After the war, Tomás disposed of the remaining items in the business and retired (Merino de Cáceres and Martínez Ruiz, 2012).
