Description

Jules Maciet (1846-1911) was the son of Charles Jules Maciet and Olympe Gabrielle Maciet. He was educated at the prestigious Lycée Louis-le-Grand and by the age of fourteen he was well acquainted with the Louvre Museum. Although he never practiced, Maciet studied law and defended his thesis in 1869; instead, he chose to devote himself entirely to collecting (Koechlin, 1912). Maciet was a generous benefactor of numerous French museums: he began his donations with the Château-Thierry museum, to which he contributed since its foundation in 1876 and collaborated with important institutions such as the Louvre, the Carnavalet Museum, the Army Museum, the Luxembourg Museum and others in cities such as Dijon, Lille or Limoges. But, undoubtedly, his closest link was with the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (Haberschill, 2022). In 1878 he participated in its foundation and donated almost 350 objects. In addition, between 1895-1911 he chaired the museum's committee and promoted a different didactic approach. Regarding his facet as a collector, Maciet was very interested in ceramics, carpets, and Chinese and Japanese objects (Haberschill, 2022).
