Description

The Musée de Castres (France) opened in 1840 with nine paintings owned by the City Council. Thanks to Marcel Briguiboul, his wife Valentine, and their son Pierre, works of Spanish art began to be added to the museum’s collection. In 1894, Pierre donated eighty more pieces, some of which had belonged to his father, including three paintings by Goya. In the mid-20th century, Gaston Poulain decided to rename the institution the Musée Goya due to its specialization in Hispanic art.
