The building that now houses the Cluny Museum was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century under Abbot Jacques d'Amboise. In 1832, Alexandre du Sommerard (1779-1842), Master Councilor of the Court of Auditors, bought the complex in order to place his collection of medieval art. After his death, the works passed into the hands of the state, and it was inaugurated as a museum in 1843. The first director of the institution was Edmond Du Sommerard, son of the collector. The museum has carried out a remodeling of its facilities between 2015-2022.
