The Fitzwilliam Museum

Cambridge (United Kingdom)

Description

The University of Cambridge purchased in 1816 a large number of art objects, to which was added shortly after the library that the seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion had bequeathed. He believed that the university should have its own museum, so he donated 100,000 pounds sterling for the construction of the building, the Fitzwilliam Museum. Among the numerous pieces it houses are some from Castile and Leon: a reliquary chest and several fragments of manuscripts that were in the Royal Monastery of St. Thomas of Avila.
