Arthur Byne and Mildred Stapley Byne

Madrid (Spain)

Description

Arthur Byne and Mildred Stapley Byne were originally from the United States. Both were avid collectors, dealers, and scholars of Spanish art, particularly active during the early decades of the 20th century. The architect Arthur Byne (1884-1935) developed an early interest in Spanish art and architecture, eventually moving to Spain to acquire pieces. Mildred Stapley Byne (1875-1941), a writer, also held a deep appreciation for Spanish culture. Although the couple initially dedicated themselves to studying and documenting artworks in Spain, they soon shifted their focus towards a much more profitable activity: selling these pieces abroad (Merino de Cáceres and Martínez Ruiz, 2022). Their buyers included private collectors such as William Randolph Hearst and American museums (Merino de Cáceres and Martínez Ruiz, 2012). They were responsible for the massive export of highly valuable artworks from Spain.
