Description

The Musées royaux des Beaux-Artsof Belgium were founded in 1801 by order of Napoleon and opened to the public in 1803. Its first seat was the building of the current Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. During the Dutch period, King William I encouraged its development and expanded the collection. After Belgian independence, the museum was taken over by the State in 1841. The works of the old masters were moved to the building designed by Alphonse Balat in the Rue de la Régence in 1887.
