El Burgo de Osma Cathedral

Burgo de Osma (Soria, Spain)

Description

Construction of the cathedral in El Burgo de Osma (Soria) began during the pontificate of Saint Peter of Osma in the 11th century. Few remains of the original cathedral have survived, such as the chapter house and part of the Gothic structure. Construction of the Gothic structure was completed in the first half of the 14th century; however, work resumed in the 16th century, resulting in the construction of both the current cloister and the Chapel of Santiago. The three entrances to the cathedral are the San Miguel Gate, the Capiscolía Gate, and the South Gate. The Chapel of San Pedro originally housed the altarpiece of the Virgin and Child, now preserved at The Art Institute (Chicago, United States). Similarly, a fragment of the vestments inwhich Saint Peter of Osma was buried (Boston Museum of Fine Arts, United States) and several panels by Gonçal Perris Sarrià (Louvre Museum, Paris) that were part of the main altarpiece were also removed from the complex.
