Bertram Newhouse. Newhouse Galleries

New York (United States)

Description

Bertram Newhouse (1883–1982) was an American businessman and collector. He was the chairman of the board of directors of Newhouse Galleries Inc, a gallery that was founded in St. Louis and expanded to New York and Los Angeles. Little is known about his life beyond aspects related to the artworks he collected and the artistic projects he promoted. He spent most of his life in the United States, but traveled frequently to Europe to acquire new pieces for his collection. He played a key role in the development of the Kimbell Collection, which years later would give rise to the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth. He donated numerous works of art to institutions and museums, such as a Greco that he gave to the Prado Museum in Madrid (Brenson, 1982). His son, Clyde Newhouse (1920-1986), continued the family business.
