Object history
From the church of San Andrés de Añastro, in the county of Treviño (Burgos), the work was part of the collection of George Grey Barnard, an American sculptor and collector who formed the collection in New York that eventually gave rise to The Cloisters -the medieval art section of the Metropolitan Museum of Art-. In 1925, along with many other pieces from that collection, this panel became part of the museum's holdings.
The work forms the left side panel of the old altarpiece of the parish church of San Andrés de Añastro, while the central panel is in the Palace of the Provincial Council of Burgos. The other side panel is part of the catalog of the Zuloaga Museum in Zumaya (Guipúzcoa) (Eguía López and Portilla, 1968; Sáenz Pascual, 1996).
