Object history

Research conducted by Siracusano and Tudisco (2012) on Héctor Schenone, historian and director of the Isaac Fernández Blanco Museum (Buenos Aires, Argentina), has revealed the location of this piece: the Monastery of St. Joachim and St. Anne in Valladolid. However, it is unknown whether Schenone purchased it directly from the monastery or through an intermediary, since during his stay in Spain he visited institutions, antique dealers, and galleries with the aim of acquiring new works and bringing them to Argentina. 

Thanks to a grant he received from the Department of Cultural Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid, he was able to travel to Spain in 1947, when he acquired this carving. In addition to this work, the Argentine artist acquired the cruets and chalice from the Church of Santo Tomás Cantuariense (Salamanca), the Infant Jesus from theConvent of Santa Isabel de El Espinar (Salamanca), and the sculpture of Saint Lawrence from the Convent of Santa María de las Dueñas (Salamanca). 

After completing his fellowship, Schenone returned to Buenos Aires (Argentina), taking a large number of pieces with him. He was appointed director of the Isaac Fernández Blanco Municipal Museum in the 1960s, where he deposited his personal collection, including this crucified Christ. The Argentine passed away in 2014 and bequeathed his collection to the institution. Thus, the piece is currently housed at the Isaac Fernández Blanco Municipal Museum (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Description

This sculpture, depicting Christ on the cross, is carved from boxwood. Its form follows the models introduced by the Leoni family in the city of Valladolid. The elongated figure, the expressive face tilted to the left, the finely carved hair and beard, and the folds of the cloth of purity are some of the most significant characteristics that allow us to attribute it to a Castilian master. According to Siracusano and Tudisco (2012), the polychromy of the piece is a later addition. Similarly, the base of the cross dates to the 18th century. The carving was exhibited for the first time in Argentina at the History and Religious Art exhibition held in Buenos Aires in 1948.

* The relative location of dealers, antique shops, art galleries, and collectors leads us to the places where they were based or had one of their main headquarters. However, this does not always indicate that every artwork that passed through their hands was physically located there. In the case of antique dealers and art merchants, their business often extended across multiple territories; sometimes they would purchase items at their origin and send them directly to clients. Similarly, some collectors owned multiple residences, sometimes in different countries, where they housed their collections. It is often difficult to determine exactly where a specific piece was kept during its time in their possession. Consequently, the main location of the dealer or collector is indicated. These factors should be considered when interpreting the map. Refer to the object's history in each case.
