"Aunt Jesusa"

Madrid (Spain)

Description

Behind the pseudonym of Aunt Jesusa hid a woman who could neither write nor read. However, she was known in Madrid for trading in antiques. Among the rich treasures she sold were tapestries that had been stolen from the Royal Palace, an operation for which she was prosecuted. Aunt Jesusa worked in partnership with a marquis and both were responsible for the sale and subsequent dispersal of 69 manuscripts from the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos (Besse, 1897; Ruiz and González de Linares, 1978).
