The University of Arizona Museum of Art

Tucson, Arizona (United States)

Description

The University of Arizona Museum of Art has its roots in early efforts to foster art education on the University of Arizona campus. In 1912 Jennie V. Cannon organized the first documented art exhibition at the university, featuring works by artists from California and Arizona. Subsequently, Professor Katherine Kitt organized an exhibition of 135 paintings by students, marking a milestone in art appreciation on campus. Her dedication led to the creation of the Art Department in 1927. During the 1930s, the Works Projects Administration donated 200 lithographs and prints, forming the core of the museum's initial collection. In the 1940s alumnus Charles Leonard Pfeiffer donated numerous paintings, and in the 1950s the Samuel H. Kress Foundation donated 50 European paintings. These contributions culminated in the official founding of the museum in 1956. It houses numerous pieces from Castilla y León, such as the altarpiece from the Cathedral of Ciudad Rodrigo painted by Fernando Gallego or the Visitation of the Master of the Catholic Monarchs from Valladolid.
