Cathedral of Ciudad Rodrigo

Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca, Spain)

Description

Construction of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Santa María (Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca) began in the late 12th century. In the 16th century, the original Romanesque apse was demolished; it had housed a late-Gothic altarpiece attributed to Fernando Gallego. The altarpiece was sold by the cathedral chapter in 1879 to José Fallola, who exported the work abroad (Quinn, 1961; Yarza, 2006). Today, the panels arehoused at the University of Arizona Museum of Art (Tucson, United States).
