M. Knoedler and Company

New York (United States)

Description

Michael Knoedler, of Bavarian origin, was the founder of the firm M. Knoedler & Company in 1857. His training with art dealers such as Goupil & Cie motivated him to establish his own business in New York in 1846. In 1877, his son, Roland Knoedler, joined his father’s firm, and after his father’s death, expanded the business by opening branches in London, Paris, and Pittsburgh. During this new phase, Roland received the support of Charles Carstairs, which enabled them to become market leaders due to their extensive connections. In 1930, one of the most significant transactions took place: the sale of a collection of paintings from the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, acquired by the Soviet government (Merino de Cáceres and Martínez Ruiz, 2012). However, Knoedler became embroiled in high-profile controversies, as he was accused of assisting the Nazis in selling looted artwork (Ripps, 2014). Years later, between 1990 and 2000, the gallery lost its prestige after being accused of selling forged paintings, ultimately leading to its closure in 2011.
